Buffalo Conservation
Join renowned conservationist Lindsay Hunt and his team at Hunt Africa on this thoroughly rewarding and varied project, which will see you working with Africa’s most dangerous animal, the Cape Buffalo. The project includes a range of introductory sessions on everything from identifying African wildlife through to tracking spoor, survival skills, fire arms & dart gun safety, breeding programs and much more. A special feature of the project is a stunning 4-day guided Kruger safari towards the end of your stay. Bovine tuberculosis was discovered in 1990, an airborne disease with no cure and an ineffective vaccine. The buffalo can carry this disease for many years, literally wasting away or succumbing to predation. This had a massive impact on South Africa’s wild buffalo population, with diseased carcasses affecting lions, vultures and other predators and scavengers. The SANP (South African National Parks) Board devised a plan to breed disease free buffalo in conjunction with vets & scientists. Lindsay Hunt took on the challenge by working with South Africa’s most important Buffalo gene pool in the Kruger Park area. Through 10 years of extensive working with wild buffalo, Lindsay has developed systems and methods that allow him and his team to work with the species in a way that has gained acclaim throughout the wildlife industry. As a volunteer, you will learn to work with what is widely regarded as the most dangerous of the ‘Big 5’, and interact with it on a level that is traditionally thought of as impossible. Lindsay’s farm was the first project to ever produce disease-free buffalo from disease positive parent stock. As a consequence of this pioneering project, disease-free buffalo of the Kruger National Park gene pool are now in all 9 provinces of South Africa. Your contribution to this on-going breeding and research program will not only assist in the continued genetic diversity of the South African buffalo population, but will also expose you to a hands-on conservation project that was the first of its kind. Lindsay and his ground breaking project recently featured in an Animal Planet wildlife documentary entitled ‘Buffalo Warrior’, which will be on air by early 2008.
